Our philosophy on Chalet Food

Firstly, it is not about us.  Afterall, it is your holiday.
Thus, we tailor our meals to fit your food preferences - whilst all the time trying to ensure we deliver tasty, mouth-watering dishes that get you salivating..

Maison Jaune was in the final three in our class in the Times Chalet Chef Competition 2010 which culminated in a cook-off in London, judged by a panel of seven judges, including Michelin-starred chef, Tom Aikens, on the 16th November 2009.

Consequently we are extremely fired up about our cooking this season, and we are really looking forward to serving you some fantastic, new dishes.

A hearty breakfast fit for Champions

French croissants and pain-au-chocolats are left to rise overnight in a warm place.  The following morning, Helen will be up about 6:15am to put them in to bake - meanwhile Leighton drives down to the local bakery for fresh bread - to ensure that, by the time you descend for your breakfast, you will be greeted by the smell of freshly-baked croissants and pain-au-chocolats, a hot pot of steaming breakfast coffee, fresh orange juice, yoghurts, eggs, ham and cheese, cereals, bread, jams and preserves, and the table fully laid out, just waiting for you.

Celebrating?

If you wish, we can arrange a champagne breakfast with bucks fizz, smoked salmon with scrambled eggs, and a birthday cake.

Afternoon tea and cakes

We know how skiing can create an appetite.  So, homemade cakes - baked fresh every morning - biscuits, bread and jams are ready and waiting for you when you get back from your days skiing.  We have a fresh pot of coffee or tea on the brew for you. Or perhaps you'd prefer a steaming mug of hot chocolate to warm your insides. No problem.

Gastronomic pleasure awaits every evening

On a skiing holiday, the evening meal is special.  It is a time to talk: about your adventures of the day, how your skiing is coming on, the successes of your children's ski lessons, and when or whether to ski the Vallée Blanche, etc.

It is a time of reflection and anticipation.  And a time to replenish your energy reserves too.
You want to be sure that your skiing holiday is well catered.

The centrepiece of the dining area is a beautiful, solid, round oak table that seats 10 with ease.  So, six nights a week, you will enjoy 4 delicious courses - hearty portions of wonderful food accompanied by free-flowing wine whilst the meal is served.

High chairs are available for babies

One night a week, we take the evening off.  This gives you a chance to sample some of the fine restaurants in Les Houches or Chamonix.  We will happily make a reservation for you with the restaurant of your choice - and arrange transport there and back. We have produced a small guide to over thirty-seven restaurants we recommend in the valley to help you choose.

Fabulous menus, local specialities

Every year we prepare new menus - sometimes keeping favourite dishes from previous years - sometimes trying new recipes that will tantilise and titilate the taste buds.

Previous dishes we have cooked for guests include....

  • Gambas flambéed in Pastis
  • Warm Goat's Cheese Salad with Honey and Garlic
  • Pan-fried Rouget on a Banana and Coriander Salsa served with a Chilli, Lemongrass and Malibu Cappuccino
  • North African spiced Lamb Shanks served with a cumin and pistachio Cous-Cous
  • Croustillant de Saumon au Basilic served on a bed of Fennel with Oven-Roasted Cherry Vine Tomatoes
  • Nigel Slater's White Chocolate Mousse with Cardamom and Bay Leaves
  • Lemon curd parfait with seasonal berries
  • Individual bread-and-butter puddings served with a ginger custard
  • Everyone's favourite: Sticky Toffee Pudding with a caramel sauce

Although we like to prepare gourmet food that rivals the best local restaurants, we realise how important it is to cater for your group's tastes. So, if your group prefers 'simpler' food - eg pasta, lasagne, cottage pie - please let us know - this is no problem as we prefer to change our menus and receive empty plates back!

Catered to your dietary requirements

Whether you are vegetarian, hallal, have a nut allergy, or any other dietary requirement, do not worry.
Please let us know beforehand - we will readily adjust the menus to reflect your needs, or prepare individual dishes if necessary, to ensure that you enjoy the best that our cooking offers, and others enjoy their meals too.
